See the Coffee World!

The Grind Cafe – Chicago
Kafein – Evanston

The first thing I do when i’m planning a trip to a new city is to Google search for indie coffee shops that I can hit up when I’m in town.

I’m a coffee junkie, more than anyone I know. I’m no barista, I can’t do latte art, when I go to a coffee joint, it’s for a well crafted drink by people with experience and passion, where I can sit and write for a few hours. I like the atmosphere, the people, the music, everything about the Indie coffee scene.

It takes me a while to research. I google the names. I go to the websites, and see what their menu has, what their hours are, and how their prices look. Then I compile the essentials in my Moleskin. It’s kind of a bitch. So now, I am putting together profiles of some of the places I have visited in my travels, hoping it will help others like me, jonesing for a fix in a strange new place.

So, a little about the content. First of all, I know I’m not the first person to have this idea, I’ve seen and read other people’s coffee shop review blogs. And they’re good. In my opinion, the more the merrier. The more information that is out there promoting small independent coffee shops, the less we’re going to see of the big nasty chains that dominate the country.

When I do a write up, it’s probably going to be some a basic formula of facts about the place (wi-fi information, vegan/vegetarian friendliness, Fair/direct trade status, menu options, atmosphere, freindliness of the staff, hours of operation, proximity to cool shit, anything else that seems like it should be known,) as well as some info about my particular visit. I am toying with the idea of including a list of nearby Starbucks to avoid – in the interest of promoting independent coffee locations.

That’s it. Enjoy!

Why would you care if a coffee shop is vegan/vegetarian friendly?
